Patrol Division
The Patrol Division is the most visible division in the department. The officers in the Patrol Division cover 13.5 square miles including approximately 5 miles of Interstate 65. Patrol Officers answer over 4,000 calls for service each year. In 2018, officers took 1,400 incident reports and 180 traffic accident reports. The primary responsibility for the Patrol Division is to respond to calls for service, conduct traffic stops, investigate suspicious activity, and investigate traffic crashes.
Patrol officers are encouraged to use a balanced mixture of traditional police enforcement measures while effectively using a community policing philosophy to address chronic crime and disorder. Patrol Officers are focused on conducting high-visibility patrol, serving as a deterrent to criminal activity and remaining accessible to members of the community. This enables community members and patrol officers more of an opportunity to build stronger relationships. In turn, they both become more familiar with the problems associated with that neighborhood and can work together in an effort to remedy problems plaguing the area.
